Heads. "A Mural Is Worth A Thousand Words"

Music video for A Mural is Worth a Thousand Words by Heads., a noise-rock trio hailing from Australia and Germany, currently based in Berlin.

A glitched-out expression of the song’s aggression, the video is essentially a portrait which takes Heads.’ lead vocalist Ed Fraser through a series of distorted transformations in an attempt to channel the music through the singer’s on-screen image. The result is at times subtle and at other times, jarring. The schizophrenic theme created by the video manipulation is a blatant reference to the concept of the alter-ego persona often experienced by performers as they lose their habitual inhibitions whilst performing intensely emotional music.

Conceived and Created by Scn9a art director J.E. Murphy, with cinematography by Max Saurma.

Open Book Gesture recognition software

Open Book

Interactive V-Book

Open Book

Open Book was originally commissioned to accompany the book launch of 'Modern Movement', a collection of Photography stills by Tom Kavanagh showcasing prominent figures in Berlin's early-millenium alternative music scene.

The software digitally splays the book's contents onto a virtual 3D environment which, through the use of gesture recognition cameras, becomes an NUI or 'Natural User Interface' image viewer. It Allows the user to manipulate the image plane with a variety of familiar hand gestures and even display information about each image.

Promo Artwork & Identity

Liste Noire

When Berlin based Velvet Condom recruited new band member Kalle in summer 2014 they began making radical changes, starting with a new moniker: “Liste Noire”. SCN9A helped shape their new identity by creating a new logomark and logotype, something the band had been keen to employ for years to rid themselves of the perennial problem of promotional material presence, especially when lined up along other artists.

It was in exploring new graphic directions for the band’s collateral artwork however where the project really came into its own, not least as it involved the creation of in-house custom-built image glitching software. Using the images produced here in combination with more traditional digital production techniques resulted in a compendium of bespoke artwork which will be rolled out incrementally over 2015/2016.

Smith

Electro-acoustic application that composes and performs a continuous, original symphony of electronic compositions. Algorithms within its code allow for user manipulation of its compositional style by means of an intuitive colour wheel interface.

With a single touch or click its design allows the user to simultaneously adapt the music's tempo, dynamics, rhythm, harmony, timbre and complexity. Just as one is able to change the mood of an environment by adjusting a dimmer switch for example, Smith allows a user to apply that level of deft, intuitive control to the music within a space.

The video below is a 1 hour 15 minute recording from an early iteration of the program.
